Syrah Grapes Las Madres is a meticulously farmed Syrah vineyard situated in the Sonoma Carneros. The hillside site is aligned east - west, and nestled in a bowl. This allows for excellent ripening during the day, while benefitting from cool marine-influenced temperatures at night. Day to night temperatures easily vary by 35ยบ F. The clonal selections are Entav 174 and 300, all on 101-14 rootstock. VSP trellising allows maximum grower/ winemaker influence. The vineyard is staged to yield no more than 4 tons per acre.

This vineyard works hard as we practice deficit irrigation. Always looking for the benefits of extended hang time, we harvest late in the season, achieving the full complexity of Syrah flavors.

Now in our 11th leaf, Las Madres Vineyards is hitting its stride. The wines created from our grapes consistently express bright fruit, complex flavors, and an excellent natural acid profile. Las Madres Syrahs are never jammy.

Our hard work is paying off. Wines from Las Madres Vineyards have been showcased in CNN Money and Fortune magazine. They have garnered awards, including SF Chronicle Top 100 Wines. James Laube of The Wine Spectator says, "The Nicholson Ranch Carneros Las Madres Syrah is the best wine I've tried from this Carneros winery," and gives it 93 points. Las Madres Syrah also received 93 points from The Wine Enthusiast.

Just last year, in the inaugural Sonoma Valley Wine Competition, with 46 wineries competing, the 2006 Las Madres Syrah, Nicholson Ranch won - not just best Syrah - but Best Red Wine, across all red varietals.

Our vineyard will never produce more than 1800 cases of wine per year. Our goal is that all wines from Las Madres Vineyards be notable and coveted.

We have limited grapes available to those we feel will be most successful vinifying our fruit. We invite you to tour the vineyard and taste the wines.
